23 Things

You have reached my blog for 23 Things which Maryland Public Libraries are investigating this summer. What a great way to introduce staff to the new technologies available on the web. I look forward to the fun and the learning! ~ Ann

23 Things Road

I just searched "23 Things" in Google Maps and there is a place!

Week 4 - RSS and Merlin

#8 RSS Feeds
Making life simple...what a novel idea in these busy times. I knew something like RSS would be "invented", but was not aware that it was already here and so easy to use. I especially liked the 23 things tutorial with the hands flying around, busy hands. http://www.bloglines.com/

I have created an account with Bloglines. No doubt, I have selected more than I actually have time to read, but will try it out and deselected the ones that aren't relevant.

#9 Merlin
I have a Merlin account and need to check it much more than I do. RSS feeds for this is the perfect solution to keep me in touch with up to date information about new technologies. The Merlin site is a golden resource that needs to be tapped into. http://www.merlin.lib.md.us/

Week 3 - Photos and Images

#5 Explore Flickr
What fun with the images and photos. I still have some investigating to do, but have at least gotten enough of Flickr to help others who need assistance. Are you having fun yet? I am!

# 7 Anything Technology
Ah!!!...digital fun. I will be bringing my camera to work tomorrow to get some photos of our library to add to mdlibrarieslearning2 photos on the Flickr site. I do have so much fun with my digital camera. Thanks "you know who"!
(these will be post soon)

I also look forward to posting photos on Picasa Web Albums for my Mom who often struggles with email attachments and the discs I mail to her.

Week 1 & 2

WEEK 1 - Blogging and Life Long Learning
#1 Read over the 23 things blog.

There has been some frustration with getting things done. I am now trying to get ahead of staff so I can be in a better position to help them when they get stuck.

Looked over some of the blogs that have been registered and am very impressed. Some are quite fancy. I do hope that those who have been frustrated will start to relax, get the help they need and start having fun.

#2 Lifelong Learning and L2
Setting goals -- ah, so necessary in order to accomplish anything. Adding the 1/2 to play = enjoy the process. Many of the hardest things I have done in life have also given me great enjoyment in the process as well as the result. Working on my educational goals, many seemed so long term, but little by little the efforts reach the goal.

In order to set a new goal, one which I would like to pursue with the following documentation, is to improve my skills with my digital camera.
Learning Contract:
Goal: Improve skill with taking digital photos
Obstacles: Time/Interruptions
Toolbox: Web & Other Resources/Digital Camera/Discs/Paper/Better Printer
Resources for Help: Olympus site and listserv/manual (paper and software help)
Path to Goal: Each week, set aside one hour for project (do this on paper calendar - visual - as reminder)
Check in: Every 2 weeks

Getting Started

As usual, I am a bit behind in getting started with 23 Things. Several staff members are needing some guidance which has given me a chance to set my nose to the gridstone and, at least, get started. Finding time is the biggest challenge, but I find that when others need help, it motivates me to find an hour here or there. Once on track, we will all keep rooling. What a womderful way to be introduced and really get dirty with this new technology on the web.
